Mickey, Donald & Goofy: The Three Musketeers 5*

Clip mashup, "musketeers". Traditional Disney cartoon musical. Dreams and teams win. Opera background has symphony and song. Stars and bubbles replace injuries.

Banjo-playing turtle narrates in "zee axzong fransay" to prelude stills and recurs. Tall black bass(et) hounds are Royal 17th century French guards. They rescue the street urchin trio, and dog Pluto, to "All for One" song, and gift him souvenir hat. Tones are not the original squeak, squawk, and hillbilly guffaw, but suit slapstick destruction the janitors wreak. Huge peg-leg Captain Pete scoffs their ambition, until Princess Minnie demands bodyguards. Guess who the villain assigns?

I liked the deep threatening-throated Pete (Jim Cummings) better than girly Mickey (Wayne Allwine), but "all for fun is fun for all". Princess Minnie dreams of true love despite skeptical side-kick lady-in-waiting Daisy, whose advice is classic "If you want love, get a dog". Pete plots assassination and coup with Mwahaha cow Clarabelle. My favorite moment might be her surprise romance. Sweet Wings of Love song.

Spoiler with Goofy: Mickey knows team-work wins out. He may be small, but his with friends coward and doofus, he's ten feet tall.

Extras are Language French (better because narrator not annoying faux Francais) or Spanish, games (choose silly singalong song - underpants, homework, cheese), activities ("Hats of Mickey" clips of 9 shorts L-R 1947 Beanstalk, Scrooge, Pauper, '36 Looking Glass, '38 Tailor '40 Fantasia '34 Gulliver '31 Jack & '31 Crusoe), music video boy trio singing "Three is the Magic Number", singalong "Wings of Love", Behind the Scenes, Commentary to scene better than some regular actor and director blather, Deleted slow narration Scenes in pencil-test version

Previews: Home on the Range, Princess Collection, Milan 2-disc (She is a modern step above passive wait-for-rescue gals)

X-Men First Class 1-2* X-rated

Preview. Confusingly cuts around the world, excessively violent. Male costumes fully cover up, females' are bare and tight. In 1944 Holocaust camp, Nazi Schmidt aka Shaw (Kevin Bacon) murders mother of Jewish Erik Lensherr (Michael Fassbender) to provoke telekinesis, and gives boy coin that expands and becomes title. In NY kitchen, rich boy Charles Xavier (James McAvoy - I keep seeing him learn assassin trade from mentor Angelina Jolie in amazing Wanted) offers food and home to hungry blue shape-shifter Raven/ Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence). Shaw kills mama, gives Erik coin that expands to title.

In 1962, Erik follows Shaw from Geneva to Argentina, "Frankenstein's monster looking for his creator". Charles saves Erik from sacrificing self; Erik covinces Charles the Cerebrus helmet that finds other mutants, although created by CIA's Hank/ Beast (Nicholas Hoult) - nerd with crush on Raven, can help the duo recruit without official interference. Shaw stays young by absorbing energy, picks up his own telepath Emma Frost (January Jones) flaunting skin, polar hideout, and aligns with Russians who make helmet that blocks mind-reading.

Explosions and violent murders by the bad guys versus tying up and running by good guys escalate to the confrontation Cuban missile crisis and exploding ships. Charles demonstrates ability to change individual commands, why does he not stop the missile orders? The finale makes even less sense than previous side-swapping. The rest of the team have characters about as deeply developed as the Hugh Jackman cameo, where he brushes off Erik and Charles. Attempt to humanize motives, balance fails, Charles = white, others = black.

Extras: Making of = staff interview talking heads to stills. Dull.

From These Ashes: complete Fredric Brown 5*

GoodReads cannot print review over 20K characters or auto-post here so ...
"From these Ashes: The Complete Short SF of Fredric Brown" include mystery, humor, all 111 tales 1941-65, from life 1906-72. Longer consideration percolates ratings up, even to 5*. My 4* personal preference for happy twists to his superb surprise endings punishes the messenger author for his clear sight into the basic cruelty of human nature. True U.S. history (nigger murder #35, fear of nuclear disaster #25,27,32,38,41,59 ...), olden days of heavy smoking and drinking, typesetters and typewriters, are not time travel. Many slip past my understanding at first, such as Runaround #5 with hidden lesson: running away can conquer the biggest baddest monster. Others stay incomprehensible 23 57 64 67-9 94 96. Faves: #1 Armageddon, 24 Crisis 1999, 32 Honeymoon in Hell, 42 The Gamblers. In the title, SF seems a restrictive outmoded inaccurate term. All works. http://www.nesfa.org/press
